Lip Enhancement (Lip Augmentation)
Lip enhancement creates fuller, plumper lips, and reduces fine wrinkles around the mouth. Lips can be injected with a variety of substances including collagen (human or bovine), hyaluronic acid, synthetics (i.e. silicone), or fat which the patient donates from another part of his/her body. Hyaluronic acid, collagen, and fat are eventually absorbed by the body so repeat treatments are necessary to maintain results. Silicone is considered to be permanent filler but has more side effects.
Lip Enhancement Techniques: The materials described above can be injected or surgically implanted into the lips. One injection is usually sufficient to produce the desired result. Depending on the filler, injections need to be repeated periodically.
Lip Augmentation Benefits:
• Immediate return to normal activities (one-day return if sedated) for nonsurgical lip augmentation procedures; depending on the procedure and materials used, recovery period is within a week for surgical procedures.

Allergic reactions, which are rare, can cause prolonged redness, swelling or itching, or firmness at the injection site. Normal swelling and bruising lasts from three days to a week.

Patients who have a serious allergy history; or are allergic to lidocaine (a local anesthetic) should not consider lip augmentation.

Treatment is sometimes postponed for patients with active inflammatory skin conditions or infections.

What is lip augmentation?
Lip augmentation encompasses a broad range of procedures from simple injections to surgical implantation of permanent implants. Fillers such as silicone and polymethylacrylate are permanent fillers sometimes used for lip augmentation. Implants are more permanent methods of lip augmentation and require surgery.

What does lip augmentation feel like?

How will my lips feel after lip augmentation?
After the lip augmentation procedure, you may experience some pain and swelling. This usually lasts a few days. In rare cases, the swelling and redness can persist for up to two weeks.
When will I see results?
Your lips will be bigger after the procedure both because of the swelling and the filler. You will see the results of the filler alone after the swelling has subsided in a few days.
How long before I can return to my normal activities?
You can most likely return to your normal activities in a few days, after the swelling subsides.
How long do the results last?
The temporary fillers in the lip last 6-18 months at best. Juvéderm® ULTRA Smile lasts usually for 6 months, Volbella for 12-18 months.
