Laser nail fungus treatment

If your fingernails are yellow, brittle or thickened, you probably have a condition called onychomycosis, also known as nail fungus. This is an extremely common problem, affecting nearly 10% of the population. If you are over 40, this rises to 25% of the age group; and over the age of 60, it is estimated that up to 50% of people have toenail fungus! Until recently, treating nail fungus was a challenge because the fungus is located under the nail, making it difficult to access. Topical medications and varnishes are usually ineffective and only serve to prevent the problem from spreading and getting worse. Internally administered drugs have an estimated success rate of 50%, but most drugs are not well tolerated by many patients and the risk of liver damage is a serious concern. Laser treatment is the newest and most effective method for removing toenail fungus.

How is laser toenail fungus treatment done?

Nd:yag laser light treats most nail fungus by penetrating the nail and killing the fungus that is embedded under the nail plate. The doctor moves the laser hand unit in quick, short strokes over the affected area. A treatment usually takes only a few minutes and the patient has no downtime (recovery time) after the procedure.

How quickly will the improvement be visible after laser treatment?

Toenails are usually replaced by natural growth in 6-9 months. Healthy new nails will be visible within 3 months of the toenail loss, as the new nail replaces the old one.

Does laser nail fungus treatment really work?

Clinical studies to date show that 80% of patients show significant improvement after treatment with the Quanta System Q-Plus Star - 1 nd:yag laser. In most cases, the nail fungus pathogen disappears completely.

How long does laser nail fungus treatment take?

In our practice, we offer 4 laser treatments per week (i.e. once a week for 4 weeks), with 4 more treatments after 2 months if needed. Laser treatment of a single nail takes a few minutes. In one treatment, all toenails are treated 3 times.

Does laser nail fungus treatment hurt?

The treatment involves shooting a laser beam at the nail, which raises the temperature to over 50°C. The patient therefore feels a warm sensation in the treated area during the treatment. The treatment is not completely painless, as the rapid temperature rise can cause a slight discomfort that disappears within minutes after the treatment.

All toenails should be treated at the same time to prevent the fungus from spreading to other nails. To ensure effective treatment, we recommend treating not only the symptomatic nail, but all five (if only one toenail has fungal toenails) or ten (if both toenails have fungal toenails). Simultaneous treatment of all nails is necessary 4 times, once a week.

Before the first treatment, have a pedicure and sand down the thickened nails to almost paper-thin!
