About tattoo removal in general

In life, circumstances are always changing. What we think is good today may seem bad tomorrow. This is especially true when it comes to a major decision like getting a tattoo. Nowadays, it is possible to remove a tattoo that has become stale or undesirable for other reasons, and the range of methods available is expanding. We want to get rid of our tattoos for a variety of reasons. Often it's because of a change in body shape (weight loss, gaining weight, sagging veins), or because the design has lost its relevance (love disappointment) or is no longer appealing, but it can also be because the tattoo didn't turn out as planned or because of strict workplace requirements.

How can I get my unwanted tattoo removed?

For scarless tattoo removal, a Q-switched laser should be used. Previous methods have used dermabrasion, saline abrasion, CO2 lasers, but after these treatments, the tattoo site has healed or become lighter than the surrounding skin. The term Q-switched means that the laser pulses so fast (measured in billionths of a second) that it can break up the ink without destroying living tissue in the process. This is similar to dragging your hand so quickly over the flame of a candle that the flame doesn't have time to burn the skin.

Will I have a scar after laser removal of my tattoo?

If you follow the aftercare instructions, the chance of scarring is less than 5%.The risk of scarring may be increased by pregnancy, dark wine tone, poor circulation, immune system deficiencies, certain photosensitizers, taking certain medications, or if there is a history of keloid or increased scarring.

Is tattoo removal painful?

Unfortunately, tattoos hurt when they are applied to the skin and also when they are removed. Lasers generate rapid pulses that each patient feels differently, but the sensation is usually unpleasant. Pain is a personal perception and everyone experiences it differently. On request, we will anaesthetise the affected area with a topical anaesthetic cream before the treatment.

How many laser treatments are needed to remove a tattoo?

Professionally applied tattoo removal is usually a fading process that consists of a series of treatments that take place approximately every 4-6 weeks. Complete removal of professional tattoos usually requires 8-10 treatments. Black inks tend to react faster than lighter hearted inks because they absorb light better. The depth of the ink in the skin, its colour and volume, as well as the location of the tattoo on the body, all significantly affect how many treatments will be required to remove a particular tattoo. Most amateur, medical and accidental tattoos can be removed in as few as 2-5 treatments.

Why did nothing change after the first treatment?

This is perfectly normal. Some people even get darker tattoos after the first treatment. Everyone reacts differently. The treatment is only effective after several sessions. Be patient, follow the doctor's advice and you will get the best possible result!

What happens after each treatment?

Immediately after each laser treatment, ice is applied to the tattoo to minimize swelling. Then, an antimicrobial and exfoliating ointment is applied to the treated area and a sterile wrap is applied. The affected area of the wine should be kept dry for a few days (preferably without water for 24 hours or soaking for a few days) and treated as you would sunburnt wine.

Will the tattoo disappear completely?

In most cases, yes. However, you should know that there are over a hundred different types of ink used for tattooing today, and none of them are regulated. In the absence of standardised inks, it is difficult to predict the extent of any tattoo removal.

Can I come back earlier than four weeks?

Are there any restrictions after treatment?

You can return to your daily activities immediately after treatment, as long as you ensure that the area is not rubbed or scratched. If you are out in the sun, cover the treated area until the wine has healed to prevent sunburn and discolouration of the area.

Fading an existing tattoo

Many tattoo artists encourage their clients to get a minimum number of laser treatments, thus fading the existing tattoo before covering it with a new one. This reduces the chances of the old tattoo showing through the new one after a while to a fraction. In most cases, 2-4 treatments are enough to fade an existing tattoo.

What should I do before treatment?

If necessary, shave the area to be treated! Avoid taking products such as Aspirin, Aleve, Motrin or Ibuprofen, as they increase the risk of haematoma, bruising.

What should I do after the treatment?

In the first 24 hours

  • At certain intervals, soothe the pain with an ice pack!

  • Rest or pad the treated area

  • Do not perform physically demanding activities.

  • Do not exercise, sauna, swimming, sunbathing or sunbathing.

After 24 hours until recovery

  • Use a hydrocortisone ointment twice a day for hydration!

  • You can do all activities except swimming (until fully healed).

  • DO NOT EXPLODE THE SLEEPERS AND DO NOT TREAT THE WATER as this increases the risk of infection and scarring!

  • Avoid sunbathing and tanning beds until fully healed!

  • Wait 4-6 weeks before your next treatment!

What to know after treatment

After treatment, hot baths, sunbathing and saunas should be avoided for 3-4 weeks. In case of scabs, do not scrape the scar. If it is not hereditary, avoiding excess weight, sauna, hot baths, tanning beds, strong sunlight, prolonged standing and sitting, and wearing comfortable shoes and clothes may help prevent further recurrence of the scab.

The laser

The Italian-made Quanta System laser is a member of the Q-switched series: the Q-Plus Star-1 can be used to remove tattoos of any colour. In Q-switched mode, very high energy (hundreds of MEGAWATT) can be delivered at very low pulse times (6ns), guaranteeing the most efficient photo-acoustic effect without heating up the tissue. Finally, the pigments of the wine to be removed, or the tattoo ink, are broken down into small units that are absorbed by phagocytosis. The effect is based on the selective thermal damage of the wine, which targets melanin, haemoglobin and water.

The Q Plus* Star 1 used in our practice is suitable for both surface and deeper vascular treatments, made possible by the short/long pulse 1064 nm Nd:Yag laser module, which produces the most ideal wavelength for this purpose, and for tattoo removal and pigment treatments, thanks to the Q-coupled 1064 nm and Q-coupled 532 nm Nd:Yag laser modules. Q-coupled Nd:Yag @1064 nm(1000 mJ, 6ns), and @532nm (500 mJ, 6ns) lasers:The 1064 nm Nd:Yag in Q-coupled mode is excellent for removing dark tattoo inks (blue, indigo, brown, black), as well as liver spots, cafe au lait spots, Ota and Ito nevus. The 532 nm Q-switched Nd:Yag laser is an excellent complement to the 1064 nm version, as this module is also suitable for removing problematic red tattoo inks.
