What is ultrasound?

For any further questions, please contact our expert colleagues at +36-70-268-08-58 or by e-mail at info@medaid.hu.

Ultrasound is the most commonly used medical imaging test in diagnostic imaging, which uses high-frequency sound waves to show live images of soft tissue in the body. Ultrasound scans allow your doctor to observe problems with organs, blood vessels and tissues without making incisions.

Unlike other imaging techniques, ultrasound does not use radiation, so it has no side effects and can be repeated as many times as you want. It is therefore the preferred method for monitoring the developing foetus during pregnancy.

Abdominal and pelvic ultrasound

In our practice, the abdomen and the pelvis are considered as one region. During the ultrasound scan, the specialist looks for abnormalities of the liver, gall bladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, bladder, uterus and ovaries. It's important to eat 6 hours before the test and drink only non-carbonated water afterwards, but plenty of it too, so that you arrive at the test with a full bladder!

Breast, underarm ultrasound & physical

In women, these tests can help diagnose breast cancer early, while in men they can help detect breast abnormalities.

Thyroid and neck

An ultrasound scan of the neck and thyroid gland can be particularly important in the case of thyroid disease or thyroid inflammation.Ultrasound technology can help to visualise structures in the neck accurately, allowing the identification of tumours, cysts or other lesions.

Carotis with Dopplerrel

This non-invasive method helps in the early detection of atherosclerosis, blood clots and other vascular problems, which is key to preventing cardiovascular disease.

Testicular-examination

Testicular screening is essential for the prevention of reproductive health and disease, and early detection can help improve treatment and prognosis.

Lower limb veins with Doppler one side

Using Doppler ultrasound technology, doctors can detect and examine the speed and direction of blood flow, as well as possible blockages in peripheral veins.

Ultrasound examination of the breasts

We also offer breast implant examination in our clinic!

The breast ultrasound scan usually takes 15-30 minutes. The great advantage of ultrasound is that it can detect lesions that cannot be detected by palpation. According to professional protocol, women over the age of 30 must also have a mammogram. Ultrasound screening is not a substitute for mammography but a complement to it.

It is painless.

How to prepare for the ultrasound scan?

Preparation for the test depends on the area or organ being tested.

Before an abdominal or pelvic examination, your doctor will ask you not to eat anything but water for 6 hours before the examination. Undigested food may block the sound waves and the radiologist will not get a clear image during the scan.

For a scan of the gall bladder, liver, pancreas or spleen, avoid eating fatty foods the night before and drink only non-carbonated water, withholding urine before the next day's scan to fill the bladder and make it easier to see. You can eat before the next day's test, but only 6 hours before. You may also have an appointment in the evening, when you can have lunch and come to the test with a full bladder.

Make sure you tell your doctor about any medicines, over-the-counter medicines or supplements you are taking before the test. Please ask the radiologist any questions you have before the examination and follow the doctor's instructions during the examination.

How is an ultrasound scan performed?

You must lie on the examination bed so that the part of the body to be examined is no longer covered by clothing. The radiologist spreads a special gel on the skin to allow the scanning head to move frictionlessly over the skin surface and to help transmit the sound waves. The probe emits high-frequency sound waves that the human ear cannot detect when directed at the body. The waves bounce off a denser material, such as an organ or bone, and are displayed on a computer to form images that are interpreted by a radiologist.

In our clinic, patients can follow the scan on a wall-mounted monitor and photographs of lesions diagnosed during the scan are printed. The gel is wiped off after the procedure. The entire scan usually takes less than 20 minutes, depending on the area being examined. After the ultrasound scan, you are free to continue working.

After examination

During the ultrasound scan, the radiologist looks for abnormalities. The results of the scan will be communicated to you immediately and you can ask any questions you may have. If necessary, you can make an appointment for a follow-up examination immediately. If the doctor sees anything abnormal on the ultrasound scan, other diagnostic tests such as a CT scan, MRI scan or biopsy may be needed. In most cases, however, the radiologist can diagnose the patient's condition on the basis of the ultrasound scan and his or her doctor can start treatment immediately on the basis of the findings.
